Software practitioners who are used to the constant emergence of new technologies for software development face a pivotal point. Traditional Software Engineering (SE) is currently undergoing a transformation influenced by the arrival of Large Language Models (LLMs) in supporting, or apparently handling, many SE tasks - from requirement engineering to software maintenance and management. However, the existing literature offers a limited understanding of how LLMs affect software practitioners. By employing a human-centric perspective, this PhD research project aims to investigate the multi-faceted nature of how software practitioners are influenced by the revolution in software engineering driven by LLM tools, as well as to suggest improvements to these tools that align with developers’ needs. Our research findings will include valuable recommendations and guidelines that can assist software team leaders, IT managers, software engineering educators, and novice practitioners in comprehending the implications of LLM adoption and effectively managing the associated trade-offs.
