Collaboration in software engineering (SE) is increasingly challenged by interdisciplinary, distributed and dynamic team structures, yet most SE research and tooling continue to overlook the emergent dynamics of team effectiveness and their relational foundation. This study aims to develop a socio-technical construct model of collaboration, based on qualitative analysis of SE professionals’ experiences and rooted in organizational psychology theory and software engineering research. By examining how emergent team properties like psychological safety, trust, and shared understanding relate to collaboration processes and outcomes, the research aims to produce a refined conceptual framework, as well as actionable guidance for supporting team effectiveness in complex SE settings. Preliminary results reveal that affective mediators are central to effective collaboration, but are rarely systematically operationalized in practice. The work seeks feedback from the SE community on refining construct definitions, designing rigorous qualitative studies, and translating these insights into comprehensive, yet accessible support for collaborative work in software projects.
