Emotional awareness—recognizing one’s own and others’ emotions—is critical for software engineering teamwork, yet teaching it remains unexplored. We investigate how an emotional awareness tool, combining biometric and self-reported data, can support team reflection during agile retrospectives in a professional training program. Through an empirical study, we find that participants valued the tool for individual self-reflection but not for team collaboration, due to reluctance to share emotions in newly formed teams. Our results suggest that educational programs should focus on building individual emotional self-awareness first, which may later enhance professional teamwork once students are comfortable with recognizing and reflecting on their emotions in the team setting.
