Embedded software is pervasive in safety-critical domains, including healthcare, automotive, aerospace, and the Internet of Things (IoT). Its maintenance and evolution are challenging due to hardware constraints, real-time requirements, and long life cycles, often exceeding 10–20 years. Studies indicate that 60–90% of software costs are related to evolution and maintenance. However, empirical evidence shows that current industrial practices remain fragmented, lacking integrative processes and specialized tools. This doctoral research addresses this gap by combining a systematic literature review (SLR), an industry survey, and the design of an integrative process supported by a software tool. The work will be validated in a real-world medical scenario: a low-cost insulin infusion pump. Preliminary results highlight heterogeneity in industrial practices, lack of standardized metrics, and difficulties in handling technical debt and obsolescence. The expected contributions include a unified process, an operational tool, and empirical evidence from both industry and academia.
