Software engineering research seems caught in a paradox: record submissions, growing venues, climbing h-indices, yet declining satisfaction and questionable real-world impact. This paper offers one perspective on what may be driving this disconnect and, more importantly, what might bring both impact and happiness back. We ground our analysis in three psychological theories that connect research structures to researcher well-being. We then propose four ideas for discussion. Idea 1: SE Everywhere through an SE + X model, embedding SE research across adjacent communities: SE + AI, SE + Society, SE + Education, SE + Systems, and SE + Global South. Idea 2: Where the world’s software is built, with India’s 5.4 million IT professionals and emerging software economies representing where SE research becomes most relevant. Idea 3: Rewarding the underexplored, creating concrete mechanisms to value bold, risky ideas over safe, incremental work. Idea 4: Short-form contributions for the AI era, because when AI can handle literature review and experiments, the human contributions can fit in 1 to 2 pages. We close with potential directions for discussion to strengthen the community’s research agenda and impact.
