Block-based programming is widely used to introduce programming to novices and young learners by reducing syntax errors through a visual interface. Yet the absence of syntax errors does not prevent all errors (e.g., semantic and runtime), and novices often struggle to identify and fix them. This study examines whether debugging hints improve the usability of block-based environments by supporting learners during error correction. We developed Blocks-DeFix, a block-based environment for Arduino and mobile robots that augments traditional error feedback with debugging hints, and evaluated it with high school students. A mixed-methods usability study compared a Test Group receiving debugging hints with a Control Group receiving traditional error feedback. Although statistical significance was limited by a small sample, findings suggest debugging hints increase effectiveness and engagement: participants receiving hints solved more errors in similar timeframes and interacted more with their programs. Interview data indicated improved understanding, confidence, and satisfaction. The study highlights the potential of integrating debugging hints to support novices facing common programming challenges.
