Recently, interest in ethics within computer science has grown, bringing issues such as privacy and fairness to the forefront. Yet, how strongly practitioners are aware of these concerns and how they prioritize them in practice remains insufficiently understood. This paper reports an empirical study investigating how practitioners perceive and are confident in operationalizing ethics in software development, and evaluating how conscious they are to adopt it. We conducted an online survey with 72 industry software professionals. Our findings point to a relevance-capability mismatch: practitioners generally recognize that everyday engineering decisions can significantly influence users, but their confidence in identifying and mitigating ethical risks is comparatively less robust and more variable. We highlight opportunities for embedding ethics developer-friendly mechanisms into everyday work products.
